I will immediately say two things: the abilities of our brain are limited, and the decision-making process is incredibly energy-price. How to live with it?
Our brain is designed so that we cannot make complex decisions for a long time. Regardless of how much we are rational, pragmatic and are able to think critically. Just the abilities of the mind are limited.
Making a choice, a person uses the prefrontal bark of the brain - then the very gray substance that is often depicted in the pictures. This department in the process of evolution developed the latter and is only 4-5% of the total volume of the brain. In general, this small and young part is our biological tool for conscious interaction with the outside world. It is there that thoughts and decisions are born.
Researchers of Cornell University calculated: every day we accept 226 decisions regarding food only. About 35 thousand decisions in general. And the smarter we become, the more options from which you have to choose, which means that it is more complicated and more difficult to make a solution. And the truth is that the mind cannot operate with a large number of data at the same time

Professors Jonathan Levav from Columbia University and Shai Dancyger from the University of Ben-Gurion held a curious experiment. They analyzed more than 1 thousand sentences issued by Israeli judges within 50 business days. The judges determined the fate of prisoners who were sentenced to punish the murder, selling drugs, rape and theft. All united one thing: lawyers have achieved a revision of the case for conditional early liberation. So: eight judges, six men and two women. On average, each worked for about 25 years. For the working day - from 9 am to 16 - the judges have time to consider about 27 cases. During this time, they had two meals: snack and a full dinner.
Do not make a decision - also a decision. And not always bad
In the course of the study, it turned out that in the morning about 65% of the verdicts was carried out in favor of prisoners - they were allowed on bail. Closer to the break, this indicator fell to zero, and after lunch again restored to 65%. Neither the severity of the crime nor serving the deadline could fully explain this trend. But the decision of the judges exactly depended on whether they were hungry or not, how many cases have already considered and how much emotionally exhausted.
For the brain, the decision-making process is incredibly energy-price. Just imagine: the brain is only 2-3% of the total body weight, but consumes up to 20% of the entire body's energy. And during intense mental work (reflections, analysis) - up to 70% of all calories that are spent during the day.
And although the fatigue from decision-making is not felt at the physical level, mental energy - the ability to effectively think - runs out with each day the choice during the day.
When we get tired, the function of self-control and cognitive functions as a whole fade. This deprives the ability to accurately weigh all factors. As a result - every next our choice we make more subconsciously than consciously. And when the entire resource has been exhausted and man is exhausted, he simply opposes further discussion of decisions in general. Another danger of the decision-making process in the tired state is autopilot.
