PISTONS - WHEN TO CHANGE
We hear a lot of questions pertaining to when should pistons be changed. In a perfect world, never would be a nice scenario, but this is not a perfect world.
Pistons, especially on the high revers like the 580, 500 twin, 600 twin and the 600 triple, have a lot of stress on them, especially in the skirt area. The bigger bores, like the 700, 800 and 900 twins, don't rev as high, but due to the long stroke and the large bore, there is a lot of pressure being put into the piston. All this tolled, inspecting/changing the pistons is a good idea, at least once a year or every 1000 to 1500 miles.
I am sure we all remember the 580 triple or single port. If the pistons were not changed at 1000 miles, 9 times out of 10, by the time the sled reached 1250 to 1500, a skirt was going to let go - almost guaranteed. Those of you with 2500 to 3000 miles on your pistons, you're walking on thin ice.
The way to prevent a skirt from breaking is simple, change the pistons. It is well worth the effort. It will also save a pile of money, because a skirt breaking at 8000 RPM will normally cost you a new case.

Dvs. att 580 motorn med triple avgas portar är tydligen känd för att "tappa kjolarna" på kolvarna vilket leder till haveri !!!!
